Obviously, plastic is not to be consumed. Our digestive system would be unable to break it down and — in a worst-case scenario — would remain in the gut and slowly destroy the system from within. According to a study commissioned by the World Wide Fund for Nature in 2019, people across the world could unwittingly consume about 5 grams of plastic each week in the course of their daily lives. To put that in perspective, that’s the weight of a credit card. Some of the plastics have some added components such as the chemical called hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), which can make the material versatile and flame-retardant but also makes it toxic.
